Homeschooling in Belize

Homeschooling is legal but requires formal Ministry registration, parent qualifications, and annual renewal.

Homeschooling is legal in Belize under Section 60.1 of the Education & Training Act 2010, which permits children to receive 'suitable education either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.' However, homeschooling remained rare until the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture to establish formal protocols and registration requirements in August 2020. Parents must obtain Ministry approval, hold an associate degree or higher, reside in Belize with legal residency status, and submit an annual application with an educational plan aligned to national curriculum standards.
