The Year Theme

The Fairy Tale Year

A six or seven-year-old is stepping out of early childhood and into the wider world. At this age, the child thinks in pictures, learns through movement, and absorbs meaning through story. Grade 1 meets them exactly there.

Letters arrive not as shapes to memorise, but as characters in a fairy tale. A tall king stands straight as the letter K. A wavy river flows through the land like S. Numbers come alive through rhythm, clapping, and stories of one sun, two hands, three wise friends. By the end of the year, children are reading, writing, and calculating, but without a single worksheet in sight.

Every day holds a main lesson, an artistic activity, and time outside. The rhythm itself is teaching them something that matters more than any fact: that learning has a shape, and they belong inside it.

What Your Child Explores in Grade 1

Letters Through Fairy Tales

Every letter is introduced through a story and a picture. The child draws the letter, then writes it, building a personal relationship with each shape before any phonics drill.

Numbers Through Movement

Counting, skipping, stamping, and clapping come before symbols. Children experience quantity in their bodies first, then meet the numerals that represent it.

Form Drawing

Straight lines and curved lines, drawn freehand, without a ruler. Form drawing trains fine motor skill, spatial awareness, and the hand-eye coordination writing depends on.

Daily Rhythm

A verse to start the day, a main lesson block, artistic work, handwork, and outdoor time. Rhythm builds security, and security is what makes deep learning possible.

Form Drawing: The Straight Line and the Curved Line

In this Main Lesson block your child will be introduced to the process of form drawing, as well as developing a rhythm for more formal learning. Through simple imaginative stories and active exploration, your child will experience simple straight and curved forms and learn to draw them beautifully in their books.

Block 3

Introducing the Alphabet

In this Main Lesson block your child will be introduced to all the letters of the alphabet and their dominant sounds. Through traditional fairytale stories, your child will experience an imaginative introduction to each letter, forming a holistic understanding of the letters and the sounds they make. Each day, your child will review the last story, discover the letter from within it through a drawing, record the letter in capital and lowercase in their Main Lesson books, and hear a new story.

Block 4

The Quality of Numbers

In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the numbers 1-12 and develop an inner connection to what these numbers actually mean. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will deepen their understanding and sense of these numbers and how they exist in the world around them. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a few simple activities to become familiar with the number of the day, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.

Block 5

First Sentences - Stories from Around the World

In this Main Lesson block your child will begin applying their letter-sound knowledge to writing. Through a broad range of folktales from around the world, your child will be supported to begin writing sentences that summarise key parts of the stories they are hearing. Each day, your child will review the last story, learn new sight words, co-construct a summary sentence to write into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story.

Block 6

Number Patterns

In this Main Lesson block, your child will begin to work with groups of numbers, laying the foundations for more formal problem solving. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will explore number groupings and patterns and become familiar with early skip counting. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a story-based problem solving activity with their counters, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.

Home Surroundings - The World Around Me

In this Main Lesson block, your child will experience a developmentally appropriate first introduction to natural science and geography. Through simple, imaginative nature stories and outdoor exploration, your child will become aware of and familiar with basic scientific concepts relating to the local natural world.

Sentence Writing from Classic Fairytales

In this Main Lesson block, your child gain confidence in drafting and publishing their own original sentences, while deepening their understanding of phonics and grammar rules. Through developmentally appropriate classic fairytales, your child will write increasingly complex and accurate sentences and publish these into their Main Lesson book. Working across a two-day rhythm, your child will review stories, work with new phonics content, draft sentences, and publish into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story

The Four Operations

In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the four mathematical processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will work with each of these different operations through short, imaginative problems that bring each operation to life. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a story-based problem-solving activity with their counters, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.

Block 10

Nature Studies - Our Natural World

In this Main Lesson block, your child will further expand their knowledge and experience of early science and geography, building on the foundations laid in the ‘Home Surroundings’ Main Lesson block. Through simple, imaginative nature stories and outdoor exploration, your child will become aware of and familiar with broad natural, scientific, and geographic concepts. Each day, your child will work with a simple nature story and a nature-based activity to explore new early science concepts.

Story Writing from Grimms Fairytales

In this Main Lesson block, your child will write increasingly extended stories, based on the fairy tales they have heard. Along with drafting and publishing their own stories, they will be introduced to a range of phonics and grammar rules and have opportunities to practice these in context. Working across a three-day rhythm, your child will review stories, work with new phonics content, draft sentences, and publish into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story

Problem Solving

In this Main Lesson block, your child will consolidate their understanding of the four mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Grade 1 Questions

What age is Grade 1 for?

Waldorf Inspired Grade 1 is designed for children aged 6 to 7, typically in their first year of formal schooling. The curriculum is paced gently and works well for children who are just starting to read, or who have never encountered formal lessons before.

My child already reads. Is Grade 1 still valuable?

Yes. Grade 1 is not just about learning to read. It introduces form drawing, Waldorf Inspired maths, rhythmic memorisation, and a whole-child approach that cannot be reproduced by early reading alone. Many families find their early readers blossom when the full curriculum wraps around them.

How much time does Grade 1 take each day?

Plan on around 2 to 3 hours per day, including the main lesson, artistic activities, and outdoor time. You can adjust the pace to match your child. Most families follow a four-day rhythm with a free or light day each week.
