In this Main Lesson block your child will be introduced to all the letters of the alphabet and their dominant sounds. Through traditional fairytale stories, your child will experience an imaginative introduction to each letter, forming a holistic understanding of the letters and the sounds they make. Each day, your child will review the last story, discover the letter from within it through a drawing, record the letter in capital and lowercase in their Main Lesson books, and hear a new story.

The Quality of Numbers

In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the numbers 1-12 and develop an inner connection to what these numbers actually mean. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will deepen their understanding and sense of these numbers and how they exist in the world around them. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a few simple activities to become familiar with the number of the day, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.

First Sentences - Stories from Around the World

In this Main Lesson block your child will begin applying their letter-sound knowledge to writing. Through a broad range of folktales from around the world, your child will be supported to begin writing sentences that summarise key parts of the stories they are hearing. Each day, your child will review the last story, learn new sight words, co-construct a summary sentence to write into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story.

Number Patterns

In this Main Lesson block, your child will begin to work with groups of numbers, laying the foundations for more formal problem solving. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will explore number groupings and patterns and become familiar with early skip counting. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a story-based problem solving activity with their counters, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.

Home Surroundings - The World Around Me

In this Main Lesson block, your child will experience a developmentally appropriate first introduction to natural science and geography. Through simple, imaginative nature stories and outdoor exploration, your child will become aware of and familiar with basic scientific concepts relating to the local natural world.

Each day, your child will work with a simple nature story and a nature-based activity to explore new early science concepts.

Exploring Place Value

In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the fundamental mathematical concept of Place Value. Through an imaginative adventure story, your child will explore this concept in a creative and hands-on way, building confidence with larger numbers and early addition strategies along the way.

A Hero's Tale

In this Main Lesson block, your child will strengthen their grammar and phonics skills while building confidence and stamina for more independent, structured written compositions. Through the epic tale of the Celtic hero Finn MacCool, your child will develop both their written language skills as well has having the opportunity to challenge themselves physically with a series of tasks based on the stories.

Maths Magic

In this Main Lesson block, your child will become familiar with the times tables 1-12 through an experience of the real-life magic of the appearing patterns and geometric forms. These are created through movement and drawing, and the experience of using a simple 10-pointed circle to ‘solve’ times tables. This block also provides a basis for linking multiplication and division, as your child will begin to see how division is just the inverse of multiplication.

In this Main Lesson block, your child will explore the big picture of time in an imaginative, introductory way. In this Main Lesson block, your child will explore the biographies of four inspiring individuals, while continuing to build their writing and grammar skills. Through stories about the real lives of Saint Francis of Assisi, Jane Goodall, Abdul Sattar Edhi, and Wangari Maathai, increasingly advanced English skills will be introduced and consolidated, along with creative, meaningful tasks.

In this Main Lesson block, your child will learn a range of addition and subtraction strategies based on their existing place value knowledge. In this Main Lesson block, your child will hear the Stories of Creation and early humanity from the Hebrew Scriptures.
