Form Drawing: The Straight Line and the Curved Line
In this Main Lesson block your child will be introduced to the process of form drawing, as well as developing a rhythm for more formal learning. Through simple imaginative stories and active exploration, your child will experience simple straight and curved forms and learn to draw them beautifully in their books.
Introducing the Alphabet
In this Main Lesson block your child will be introduced to all the letters of the alphabet and their dominant sounds. Through traditional fairytale stories, your child will experience an imaginative introduction to each letter, forming a holistic understanding of the letters and the sounds they make. Each day, your child will review the last story, discover the letter from within it through a drawing, record the letter in capital and lowercase in their Main Lesson books, and hear a new story.
The Quality of Numbers
In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the numbers 1-12 and develop an inner connection to what these numbers actually mean. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will deepen their understanding and sense of these numbers and how they exist in the world around them. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a few simple activities to become familiar with the number of the day, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.
First Sentences - Stories from Around the World
In this Main Lesson block your child will begin applying their letter-sound knowledge to writing. Through a broad range of folktales from around the world, your child will be supported to begin writing sentences that summarise key parts of the stories they are hearing. Each day, your child will review the last story, learn new sight words, co-construct a summary sentence to write into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story.
Number Patterns
In this Main Lesson block, your child will begin to work with groups of numbers, laying the foundations for more formal problem solving. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will explore number groupings and patterns and become familiar with early skip counting. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a story-based problem solving activity with their counters, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.
Home Surroundings - The World Around Me
In this Main Lesson block, your child will experience a developmentally appropriate first introduction to natural science and geography. Through simple, imaginative nature stories and outdoor exploration, your child will become aware of and familiar with basic scientific concepts relating to the local natural world.
Sentence Writing from Classic Fairytales
In this Main Lesson block, your child gain confidence in drafting and publishing their own original sentences, while deepening their understanding of phonics and grammar rules. Through developmentally appropriate classic fairytales, your child will write increasingly complex and accurate sentences and publish these into their Main Lesson book. Working across a two-day rhythm, your child will review stories, work with new phonics content, draft sentences, and publish into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story
The Four Operations
In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the four mathematical processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will work with each of these different operations through short, imaginative problems that bring each operation to life. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a story-based problem-solving activity with their counters, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.
Nature Studies - Our Natural World
In this Main Lesson block, your child will further expand their knowledge and experience of early science and geography, building on the foundations laid in the ‘Home Surroundings’ Main Lesson block. Through simple, imaginative nature stories and outdoor exploration, your child will become aware of and familiar with broad natural, scientific, and geographic concepts. Each day, your child will work with a simple nature story and a nature-based activity to explore new early science concepts.
Story Writing from Grimms Fairytales
In this Main Lesson block, your child will write increasingly extended stories, based on the fairy tales they have heard. Along with drafting and publishing their own stories, they will be introduced to a range of phonics and grammar rules and have opportunities to practice these in context. Working across a three-day rhythm, your child will review stories, work with new phonics content, draft sentences, and publish into their Main Lesson book alongside a drawing, and hear a new story
Problem Solving
In this Main Lesson block, your child will consolidate their understanding of the four mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Through a fairytale-esque adventure story that continues throughout the Maths Main Lesson Blocks this year, your child will work with all four operations in an interconnected way, coming to understand the connections between them. Each day, your child will review the previous story and learning, hear a new story, do a story-based problem-solving activity with their counters, and record it beautifully in the Main Lesson books.

Introduction
Overview of the Grade 2 Curriculum
Symmetry
In this Main Lesson block, your child will work with increasingly challenging form drawing to explore the concept of symmetry with both horizontal and vertical midlines. Through simple, imaginative stories and hands-on exploration, your child will further develop fine and gross-motor skills, midline integration, and a sense of balance.
Animal Fables
In this Main Lesson block, your child will explore a selection of Aesops Fables. Through these short stories, they will learn a range of new phonics and grammar rules, and build independent writing confidence and stamina. A strong rhythm of stories, new concept learning, drafting, and publishing will help this block to flow and keep your child engaged with the range of creative learning, finishing the block with a beautiful Main Lesson book.
Exploring Place Value
In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the fundamental mathematical concept of Place Value. Through an imaginative adventure story, your child will explore this concept in a creative and hands-on way, building confidence with larger numbers and early addition strategies along the way.
A Hero's Tale
In this Main Lesson block, your child will strengthen their grammar and phonics skills while building confidence and stamina for more independent, structured written compositions. Through the epic tale of the Celtic hero Finn MacCool, your child will develop both their written language skills as well has having the opportunity to challenge themselves physically with a series of tasks based on the stories.
Maths Magic
In this Main Lesson block, your child will become familiar with the times tables 1-12 through an experience of the real-life magic of the appearing patterns and geometric forms. These are created through movement and drawing, and the experience of using a simple 10-pointed circle to ‘solve’ times tables. This block also provides a basis for linking multiplication and division, as your child will begin to see how division is just the inverse of multiplication.
Nature Studies
In this Main Lesson block, your child will explore the big picture of time in an imaginative, introductory way. Through indigenous folktales from around the world, they will work with time concepts while exploring introductory forms of poetry. By the end of the Main Lesson block, your child will be able to:
Inspiring People
In this Main Lesson block, your child will explore the biographies of four inspiring individuals, while continuing to build their writing and grammar skills. Through stories about the real lives of Saint Francis of Assisi, Jane Goodall, Abdul Sattar Edhi, and Wangari Maathai, increasingly advanced English skills will be introduced and consolidated, along with creative, meaningful tasks.
Place Value and Strategies
In this Main Lesson block, your child will learn a range of addition and subtraction strategies based on their existing place value knowledge. These strategies are introduced and practised with the intention of supporting your child to consolidate their place value knowledge while finding new ways of working with larger numbers.
Introduction to Time
In this Main Lesson block, your child will be introduced to the measurement of time, both through a historical lens and by learning to read modern clocks. Each day, your child will review previous learning, work with a new concept, and record their work. By the end of the Main Lesson block, your child will be able to:
Trickster Tales
In this Main Lesson block, your child will hear the stories of classic tricksters from folktales from all around the world. Through these stories, they will continue to build their phonics and writing skills, as well as work on reading tasks. A strong rhythm of stories, new concept learning, drafting, publishing, and reading tasks will help this block to flow and keep your child engaged with the range of learning, finishing the block with a beautiful Main Lesson book.
Problem Solving
In this Main Lesson block, your child will consolidate the strategies they learnt in the ‘Place Value and Strategies’ Main Lesson block through simple word problems. Known strategies are recalled and practised within the context of word problems, working towards a greater understanding of when to use which operation and strategy based on the problems.
Grade 3
Hebrew Creation Story
In this Main Lesson block, your child will hear the Stories of Creation and early humanity from the Hebrew Scriptures. These stories are told not as religious teaching, but as powerful, imaginative pictures that mirror the inner experience of the Class/Grade Three child. At this age, children begin to feel themselves more separate from the world around them, and these stories reflect that awakening with deep truth, warmth and reassurance.

In this Main Lesson block, your child will follow the Israelites after Moses’ death, through the leadership of Joshua, the era of the Judges, and the rise of the Kings - Saul, David, and Solomon. The stories are stirring, full of courage, failure, hope, humility, loss, and faith.
