Homeschool Co-ops in Texas

Texas has more homeschooling families than any other state, and it regulates them less than almost any other. That combination is why the co-op is the default here rather than the exception: there is no state body organising anything, so whatever structure a family gets, another family built it.

Most Texas co-ops meet one day a week and are attached to a church, which shapes the field more than newcomers expect. A large share ask members to sign a statement of faith. A smaller but growing number are explicitly secular and say so on their homepage. Both are listed here, and the card tells you which is which before you click, because that is the first thing most families need to know and the last thing most directories tell them.

The groups below were found through their own websites and checked against them. Texas also has a very large Facebook-only co-op scene that no directory reaches well, including this one. If yours is one of those, the claim link at the bottom is the way onto this page.

Does co-op time count toward Texas requirements?

Texas sets no minimum hours or days, so there is nothing for a co-op day to count toward. Texas does ask you to keep records, so a co-op day is worth noting in whatever you keep.

Questions families ask about Texas homeschool co-ops

How do homeschool co-ops work?

Families agree to meet on the same day each week during term, usually in a church hall, a community centre or a hired room. Parents take turns teaching, so a parent who is confident with science takes the science class and someone else takes art. Most co-ops expect a parent to stay on site rather than drop off, and most ask every family to contribute in some way, whether that is teaching, setting up or helping in a room. A term runs eight to fourteen weeks, and places are usually allocated before the term starts rather than week by week.

How much does a homeschool co-op cost?

It depends on what the co-op has to pay for. A group meeting in a member's home with borrowed materials can run on almost nothing, while a co-op hiring a hall and paying outside tutors for a few classes costs real money per term. The fees each group publishes are listed on this page where we have them, taken from the group's own website, so you can compare rather than guess. Ask what the fee covers before you commit: some cover the hall only, and materials are extra.

Can you charge for a homeschool co-op?

Most co-ops do, because a hall costs money and so do materials. What separates a co-op from a business is usually that the fee covers costs rather than paying the parents who teach. Some co-ops are incorporated as non-profits and some are an informal group with a shared bank account. If you are starting one and planning to pay teachers, that is a different undertaking with tax and insurance questions attached, and it is worth taking advice before the first term rather than after it.

Do you get money for homeschooling your child in Texas?

No. Texas has no education savings account or voucher programme for homeschooling families, so the cost of a co-op, curriculum and materials is yours. This is worth knowing before you compare Texas co-op fees against those in a state where families are spending scholarship money.

What is considered a homeschool co-op in Texas?

There is no legal definition, because Texas does not regulate the category at all. In practice a co-op is a group of homeschooling families teaching each other's children on a regular schedule. A group that meets at a park once a month is usually called a support group rather than a co-op, and a place with paid staff, tuition and admissions is a microschool, which is a different thing again.
