Homeschooling in France
Strictly regulated since 2021: authorization needed for narrow exceptions only.
Home education (instruction en famille or IEF) in France is legal only under strict exceptions requiring prior authorization from the Director Académique des Services de l'Education Nationale (DASEN). Governed by Loi n° 2021-1109 du 24 août 2021 confortant le respect des principes de la République, amended Code de l'éducation articles L. 131-2 to L. 131-10. Authorization is given each school year on one of four grounds: the child's health or disability, intensive sports or artistic activities, family itinerancy or distance from any public school, or a situation specific to the child that justifies the educational project. Families apply between 1 March and 31 May, both holders of parental authority sign, and the answer comes within 2 months. Annual inspections are mandatory.
