Questions about homeschooling in Tennessee

Can I switch from Independent to Umbrella mid-year?

Yes. Enroll in the umbrella school first, then notify the district you are transferring.

Do I have to take the TCAP test?

Only if you are registered as an Independent Homeschooler (Option 1) in grades 5, 7, or 9. Umbrella school students are usually exempt.

Can my child play sports?

Yes. Tennessee has a 'Tebow Law' allowing homeschoolers to try out for public school sports (fees and insurance requirements apply).

Which Waldorf curriculum fits your family?

Four questions: your child’s age, the time you have each day, how close to a Waldorf school you want to be, and what matters most. Your answers are matched against the 8 curricula in our comparison. Starpath is one of them and gets no extra points. The result shows on the page, and you can have it emailed to you.

Answer the four questions

Dates come from published Tennessee requirements and are not legal advice. Laws change. Cross-check with the official state source and our full Tennessee guide.
