How Does Waldorf Teach Letters in Grade 1?

In Waldorf grade 1, each letter grows out of a picture from a story. You tell a fairy tale one day. The next day your child recalls it, draws the scene and finds the letter inside the drawing: a B in the bear, an M in the mountain. Capital consonants come first, vowels are met through feeling, lowercase follows later, and writing comes before reading.

Waldorf grade 1 teaches each letter as a picture from a story. You tell a fairy tale on one day. On the next, your child tells it back and draws the scene. Then you find the letter hiding in the drawing: the bear's straight back and round belly become B. Capital consonants come first. Vowels are met through a feeling rather than an object, lowercase follows later, and children write their letters before they read them.

It's slower than many parents expect. Below: what one letter lesson looks like at your table, which letters come first and how long the alphabet takes. For the rest of the year, see What's in Waldorf grade 1?.

How do you teach letters in Waldorf grade 1?

A letter lesson runs over two mornings. This rhythm of telling one day and working with it the next runs through the whole Waldorf grade 1.

Day one: the story. You don't show the letter yet. You tell a story, ideally in your own words rather than reading it, with one strong picture at its heart. In Snow-White and Rose-Red, a great black bear knocks at the cottage door on a snowy evening.

Day two: recall and discovery. Your child tells the story back. You ask who came knocking in the snow, and say the word slowly together: B-b-b-bear. Then you draw the bear in the main lesson book with block crayons. Make its back tall and straight, its head and belly two round curves.

The letter. On the facing page, your child draws a large capital B in a strong color. The straight back goes down first, then the two curves, just as they were in the bear. Your child is looking at the bear, simplified, so there's little to memorise.

Steiner gave teachers this method at the founding of the first Waldorf school in 1919. He described drawing a fish, saying the word, and letting the F come out of the fish's shape. He suggested all letter forms first came from pictures like these, and that a child can meet them the same way.

Before any letters, many families spend a few weeks on form drawing. The straight line and the curve are the two shapes every capital is built from, so a child who has drawn them many times usually finds the letters come more easily.

Which fairy tales are used for Waldorf letter stories?

Mostly Grimms' fairy tales and folk tales, told aloud. Any story works if it has one clear picture whose shape holds the letter. A few that Waldorf teachers use:

  • B from the bear in Snow-White and Rose-Red.
  • D from the dragon in The Prince and the Dragon.
  • M from the mountain in Simeli Mountain.
  • F from a fish, Steiner's own example.

Some teachers pair letters, like W and U from a worm going underground. You don't need a different book for every letter. One good collection of Grimms' tales will carry most of the block. If you want to tell stories rather than read them, Waldorf fairy tales and storytelling has help with that.

What letters are taught first in Waldorf first grade?

Capital consonants. Steiner described consonants as drawings of things in the world: a bear, a mountain, a wave. That makes them easy to find inside a picture, so they come first.

Not in alphabetical order. Waldorf teachers are free to choose their own order and their own stories. You might start with letters whose shapes are easy to find, like M, B or F. Steiner asked teachers to invent their own pictures, so feel free to make up a story of your own.

Vowels come differently. Steiner said vowels shouldn't come from pictures of things. Instead they come from a feeling inside the story. Camellia Waldorf School describes O as warm and embracing, and I as upright and strong. You might tell a story where a child sees something wonderful and says "O!", then let your child find the round shape of that O with their arms before drawing it.

Lowercase comes later. Waldorf teachers keep to capitals first. Lowercase letters come at the end of grade 1 or in grade 2, depending on the child. Steiner showed how a capital can gradually become its small letter, so lowercase grows out of what your child already knows.

Do Waldorf children learn letter names or sounds first?

The sound comes with the picture. When you reveal the letter, you say the story word slowly and listen for its first sound together. Steiner did the same with his fish: say the word, notice the F-f-f at the start, find the F in the fins.

So your child meets the sound, the shape and the picture in one lesson, and the story holds them together.

Writing comes before reading

Steiner said reading should be built on drawing and writing. The order he gave was drawing, then writing, then reading your own handwriting, and only after that reading print.

At home, that means your child's first reading material is their own main lesson book. Once a few consonants and vowels are in, many Waldorf teachers move on to short words. First come whole words from the stories, like DRAGON or MOUNTAIN, then three-letter words like CAT and CUP. You write down a sentence your child says about the story, they copy it into their book, and you read it back together.

It can feel slow. It's meant to be. Most Waldorf children read short sentences by the end of grade 1 and read fluently by the end of grade 2 or 3. When will my Waldorf child learn to read? covers that timeline and the research behind it.

How long does it take to teach the alphabet in Waldorf grade 1?

Longer than a phonics program, and on purpose. At two days per consonant, the consonants alone take about four to five weeks of main lessons. Vowels, the first words and then lowercase letters come in later language arts blocks, with maths blocks in between.

In a school, the capitals can take up much of the first term. Lowercase and the first written sentences usually belong to the second half of the year, or to grade 2.

If your child already knows their letters, that's fine. Keep the stories and drawings anyway.

How to make a Waldorf alphabet book

Your child's main lesson book is the alphabet book. What are main lesson books? covers the book itself. For the letters you need:

  • A large, unlined main lesson book.
  • Beeswax block crayons for the pictures (Stockmar is the most common brand).
  • Stick crayons for the letters themselves.

The layout. Put the story picture on one page and the large capital on the facing page. The letter should be big enough to fill most of the page. Draw it first yourself on a separate sheet or a chalkboard, so your child can see how it grows out of the picture. Then let them draw it their own way.

Don't correct the drawings. A wobbly bear is still a bear. What matters is that the letter comes out of your child's own picture.

What to do this week

  1. Choose one letter and one story. B and Snow-White and Rose-Red is a good first pair.
  2. Tell the story on Monday, in 10 to 15 minutes, with a candle lit if that's part of your morning.
  3. On Tuesday, ask for it back, then draw the bear together and find the B.
  4. Walk the letter first. Have your child walk a big B on the floor or trace it in the air before drawing it.
  5. Keep going at two days per letter until the rhythm feels ordinary.

Frequently asked questions

+How do you teach letters in Waldorf grade 1?

Over two days per letter. On the first day you tell a story with a strong picture in it, such as the bear who knocks at the door in Snow-White and Rose-Red. On the second day your child tells the story back, you both listen for the first sound of the word, and your child draws the picture in the main lesson book. The letter is then drawn out of the picture: the bear's straight back and two round curves become B.

+What letters are taught first in Waldorf first grade?

Capital consonants. Steiner described consonants as pictures of things in the world, so they come from story images first. Teachers don't have to follow A to Z. You can begin with letters whose shapes are easy to find in a picture, such as M from a mountain or F from a fish. Vowels come in a different way, through a feeling in the story, and lowercase letters follow at the end of grade 1 or in grade 2.

+Do Waldorf children learn letter names or sounds first?

The sound comes with the picture. When you reveal the letter, you say the story word slowly and listen for its first sound: B-b-b-bear. Steiner gave the same example with a fish and F. So your child meets the sound, the shape and the picture together, in one lesson.

+How long does it take to teach the alphabet in Waldorf grade 1?

Usually most of the first term, spread over one or more language arts blocks. At about two days per consonant, the consonants alone take four to five weeks of main lessons. Vowels, lowercase letters and the first written words come in later blocks. Most children read short sentences by the end of grade 1.

+Are Waldorf letters taught with phonics?

Yes, but through the stories first. Each letter arrives with its sound. Once the vowels are in, many Waldorf teachers move on to short consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat and cup. What you won't usually see in grade 1 is phonics drills or worksheets on their own.

+How do you make a Waldorf alphabet book?

Your child's main lesson book is the alphabet book. For each letter, the picture from the story goes on one page and the large capital letter on the page facing it, drawn with block crayons. Over the block the book fills up with your child's own letters, and it becomes one of the first things they read.

Waldorf Fairy Tales and Storytelling: Which Stories Suit Each Age

Waldorf teachers tell fairy tales because children take in pictures more easily than lessons, and a told story can carry courage and kindness without a lecture. Little ones hear simple nature stories and cumulative tales. Grimm's tales come in kindergarten and grade 1, fables and legends in grade 2, and Old Testament stories in grade 3. Stories are told from memory and repeated.

What Is Form Drawing in Waldorf Education?

Form drawing is a Waldorf practice introduced in grade 1 where children draw lines and forms freely on paper. It develops handwriting readiness, spatial awareness, fine motor coordination, and the foundation for geometry. Forms progress from simple lines in grade 1 to complex symmetrical patterns in upper grades. Practiced through grades 1-8.

What Are Main Lesson Books in Waldorf Education?

A main lesson book is the book a Waldorf child makes by hand for each main lesson block. It starts blank, and the child fills it with their own writing and drawings about what they learned. A year of 8 to 12 blocks fills about that many books. By grade 8 a Waldorf student has a shelf of main lesson books, and many keep them for life.
