What is the difference between a Waldorf school and a Waldorf-inspired school?+
In Canada the Waldorf name is held by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA), which includes Canadian schools. On this map, a place is called a Waldorf school only if AWSNA lists it as a member. Other schools and programs describe their approach as Waldorf-inspired, and some are on their way to membership.
How much does a Waldorf school cost in Canada?+
Most Waldorf schools in Canada are independent and charge tuition, and many offer tuition assistance. In some provinces, including British Columbia and Alberta, independent schools receive partial public funding, which lowers tuition. Check each school’s own website for current fees.
At what age do children start?+
Parent-and-child programs and nurseries often start from age 2 or 3, kindergarten usually runs to about age 6, and grade 1 typically begins around age 6 or 7.
What if there is no Waldorf school near me?+
Many families live the Waldorf rhythm at home: the seasons and festivals, stories, handwork, and main lesson blocks. Starpath is a Waldorf-inspired homeschool curriculum written for exactly that, with the day planned out for the parent and no screens for the child. Local schools and kindergartens often welcome homeschooling families to fairs, festivals and parent-and-child groups too.
A place is called a Waldorf school or kindergarten here only when its national association lists it as a member. We check those lists ourselves and date the check.
Everything else is a place that describes its own approach as Waldorf-inspired. Many are lovely, and some are on their way to membership, so it is worth asking them.
If there is a school near you, go and see it
Most schools and kindergartens hold open mornings, and many run parent-and-child groups for the youngest. A visit tells you more than any page can. If there is no school within reach, or it is not the right fit, you can still bring the same rhythm, stories and handwork into your home.
