Questions families ask

How many Waldorf schools are there in California?+

The map lists 29 schools in California. 22 are members of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America: Berkeley Rose Waldorf School, Camellia Waldorf School, Central Coast Waldorf School, Davis Waldorf School, Highland Hall Waldorf School, Live Oak Waldorf School, and 16 more. The others describe their approach as Waldorf-inspired.

Where are the Waldorf schools and kindergartens in California?+

They are spread across 33 towns and cities. El Sobrante has 2 and Santa Cruz has 2, and the others include Alameda, Altadena and Arcadia. The map at the top of this page shows every one.

Is there a Waldorf kindergarten or playgroup in California?+

Yes. The map lists 4 kindergartens and playgroups here, including Infused Kinder Cottage (Tujunga), The Village Preschool (Santa Cruz), Tivoli Rainbow Garten Preschool (Culver City) and Village Playgarden (Arcadia). Many schools also run their own kindergarten and parent-and-child groups, so it is worth asking the schools listed above too.

Can I homeschool the Waldorf way in California?+

Yes. Homeschooling is legal in California. What you need to do, such as any notice to the authorities, records or assessment, is set out on our California homeschool requirements page, which we keep up to date. Many families here combine homeschooling with a local kindergarten, parent-and-child group or co-op.

How we label places

A place is called a Waldorf school or kindergarten here only when its national association lists it as a member. We check those lists ourselves and date the check.

Everything else is a place that describes its own approach as Waldorf-inspired. Many are lovely, and some are on their way to membership, so it is worth asking them.

If there is a school near you, go and see it

Most schools and kindergartens hold open mornings, and many run parent-and-child groups for the youngest. A visit tells you more than any page can. If there is no school within reach, or it is not the right fit, you can still bring the same rhythm, stories and handwork into your home.
