Is a Steiner school the same as a Waldorf school?+
Yes. Both names describe the education Rudolf Steiner began in 1919 with a school for the children of workers at the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory in Stuttgart. In the UK the schools have long been called Steiner or Steiner Waldorf schools, and their association is now called Waldorf UK (formerly the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship). On this map, a school is called a Waldorf school only if Waldorf UK lists it as a full member.
How much does a Steiner school cost in the UK?+
Most Steiner Waldorf schools in the UK are independent and charge fees, and many offer reduced fees or bursaries based on family income. The Steiner Academy Hereford is state-funded and free to attend. Fees change every year, so check each school’s own website.
At what age do children start?+
Parent-and-child groups often welcome babies and toddlers, and Steiner kindergartens usually take children from about age 3 to 6. Class 1 generally begins around age 6 or 7.
What if there is no Steiner school near me?+
Many families live the Waldorf rhythm at home: the seasons and festivals, stories, handwork, and main lesson blocks. Starpath is a Waldorf-inspired homeschool curriculum written for exactly that, with the day planned out for the parent and no screens for the child. Local schools and kindergartens often welcome homeschooling families to fairs, festivals and parent-and-child groups too.
A place is called a Waldorf school or kindergarten here only when its national association lists it as a member. We check those lists ourselves and date the check.
Everything else is marked Waldorf-inspired. Many are lovely, and some are on their way to membership, so it is worth asking them.
If there is a school near you, go and see it
Most schools and kindergartens hold open mornings, and many run parent-and-child groups for the youngest. A visit tells you more than any page can. If there is no school within reach, or it is not the right fit, you can still bring the same rhythm, stories and handwork into your home.
