Questions families ask

How many Steiner schools are there in England?+

The map lists 13 schools in England. 9 are members of Waldorf UK: Elmfield Rudolf Steiner School, Michael Hall Waldorf School, Ringwood Waldorf School, South Devon Steiner School, St Paul's Waldorf School, The St Michael Steiner School, and 3 more. The others describe their approach as Waldorf-inspired.

Where are the Steiner schools and kindergartens in England?+

They are spread across 20 towns and cities. Forest Row has 4, London has 4, Stroud has 3 and York has 2, and the others include Bath. The map at the top of this page shows every one.

Is there a Steiner kindergarten or playgroup in England?+

Yes. The map lists 10 kindergartens and playgroups here, including Apple Blossom Kindergarten (Manchester), Ashdown Day Nursery (Forest Row), Chartham Holistic Kindergarten (Chartham), Cobnuts Steiner Kindergarten (Maidstone) and Laurel Farm Kindergarten (Bath). Many schools also run their own kindergarten and parent-and-child groups, so it is worth asking the schools listed above too.

Can I homeschool the Waldorf way in England?+

Yes. Homeschooling is legal in England. What you need to do, such as any notice to the authorities, records or assessment, is set out on our England homeschool requirements page, which we keep up to date. Many families here combine homeschooling with a local kindergarten, parent-and-child group or co-op.

How we label places

A place is called a Waldorf school or kindergarten here only when its national association lists it as a member. We check those lists ourselves and date the check.

Everything else is marked Waldorf-inspired. Many are lovely, and some are on their way to membership, so it is worth asking them.

If there is a school near you, go and see it

Most schools and kindergartens hold open mornings, and many run parent-and-child groups for the youngest. A visit tells you more than any page can. If there is no school within reach, or it is not the right fit, you can still bring the same rhythm, stories and handwork into your home.
